Vacation vs work: Why Indians prefer to work than take leaves

A lot of Indians prefer to work, putting off or cancelling their holiday, as per a recent study, 2013 Vacation Deprivation, by Expedia. Here are some other findings:

1. 63 per cent of Indians feel they are vacation deprived. In fact, India ranked as the 10th most vacation-starved country in 2013. Last year, it ranked 4th.

2. 38 per cent of Indians work for 41-50 hours a week, which is more than that for other countries. Worse, 74 per cent have cancelled/postponed a vacation due to work.

3. 37 per cent of employees in India prefer getting money in exchange for the unused holidays, which is the highest figure in the world.

4. 46 per cent of Indians save their vacations to avail of at a future date. The country ranks third in this respect, following Malaysia and Singapore.

5. 59 per cent of the respondents in India are not able to plan their vacation in advance because it depends on their work, the highest figure among all the surveyed countries.
