Posts, customers and postal-sector players celebrated World Post Day with a bang on 9-10-2013.
Spain's Correos invited customers to take photos of themselves with their letter carrier
From Ecuador to the Philippines, postal authorities marked the annual event by hosting unique events with customers, staff, government officials and other dignitaries.
In Cotonou, Benin, the ministers of post, microfinance and territorial administration launched the festivities during a special ceremony, before joining a visit of postal facilities.
Reports said Post Fiji celebrated World Post Day “with a difference” at the post office in Suva, by erecting the first mailbox in the country. Customers normally drop their mail directly at the post office in this island country of 850,000 inhabitants and 122 post offices. Post management even took on the role of tellers and served customers first hand.
In Cyprus, the Post organized visits from schools to post offices, and an internationally known youth orchestra took part in a special event attended by the minister of communications.
In Spain, Correos organized a unique contest through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram asking customers to take photos of themselves with their letter carrier to pay homage to these workers “in an original way”.
World Post Day was also widely celebrated in Latin America. The Post of Panama used the occasion to showcase its new service Cotelbox, an e-commerce site providing package-tracing features.
Events were also held throughout Pakistan. The postmaster general of the Punjab region, Syed Faqeer Shereyar ul Din, said Pakistan Post was focusing on new communication and information technologies to provide services beyond the traditional letter and parcel services to keep pace with the changing communications market.
Letter-writing going strong
While many countries, including Viet Nam, used World Post Day to launch the 2014 edition of the international competition on the theme of music, PhilPost, the Philippines designated operator, held its first national letter-writing day in elementary and secondary schools nationwide.
More than 1,000 students were expected at a skydome in Metro Manilla to take part in a simultaneous thank-you letter-writing activity. PhilPost said it wanted to encourage students to use letters again as a means of communication.
At the same time, the Philippines’ Cy Rodriguez was given the award of merit he earned in the UPU’s 2013 international letter-writing competition.
Gold-medal winner, the Czech Republic’s Daniel Korcak, will receive his gold medal at a ceremony at UPU headquarters in November.
The UPU estimates that more than 100 countries took part in World Post Day.
