The Income Tax department has notified July 31 as the last date to file Income Tax Return (ITR) for individuals. However, everybody is not as comfortable filing IT return online all by themselves.
Here is a step-by-step do-it-yourself guide:
For starters, only ITRs 1 and 4S can be filled online. ITR-1 (Sahaj) is a return filing form applicable to the individual who derive income from salary, rent and interest. ITR-4S (Sugam) is an income tax return form used by those who have chosen presumptive business income and also derive their income from salary, rent and interest.
To prepare and submit ITR online:
1) Login to e-Filing website with User ID, Password, Date of Birth /Date of Incorporation and enter Captcha code.
2) Go to e-File and click on Prepare and Submit ITR Online
3) Select the Income Tax Return Form ITR 1/ITR 4S and the Assessment Year
4) Fill in the details and click the "Submit" button
5) Upload Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). A digital signature certificate lets you file your Tax Returns easier and more secure. Digital signature can be uploaded by going to the 'My Account' section once you are logged in.
6) Click on "Submit" button
7) On successful submission, ITR-V would be displayed (if DSC is not used).
Click on the link and download the ITR-V. ITR-V will also be sent to the registered email. If ITR is uploaded with DSC, the Return Filing process is complete.
OR
If the return is not uploaded with DSC, the ITR-V Form should be printed, signed and submitted to CPC within 120 days from the date of e-Filing. The return will be processed only upon receipt of signed ITR-V. Check your emails/SMS for reminders on non-receipt of ITR-V.
