24 states, UTs and 50 central ministries working towards doing away with affidavits in favour of self-attestation

As many as 24 states and Union Territories and 50 central ministries have abolished, or are working towards doing away with affidavits in favour of self-attestation, after the Centre pushed states last year to do so.

In a two-pronged approach, the Modi government had written to all states last year requesting them to review the requirement of affidavits for availing public services and urged them to replace them with self-attestation in a phased and time-bound manner.

A recent report compiled by the Prime Minister-led Ministry of Personnel, and accessed by ET, shows that most states and central ministries have heeded the Centre's advice, though some states like Delhi, Goa and Punjab have told the Centre that they had embarked on self-attestation even before Modi came to power at the Centre.

Among the big states, UP has informed the Centre that it has adopted the provisions of self-attestation by July 30, 2014, while Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu said that they have passed directions to expedite the implementation of the same.

West Bengal told the Centre that it has adopted selfcertification in various activities, though the system of filing affidavits in court cases shall continue till the relevant laws in that regard are amended.

Congress-ruled Assam has said it issued an order on February 23, introducing self-certification while another Congress-ruled state Himachal said it issued a similar order on January 31. BJP-ruled Rajasthan did so on November 24, 2014.
