They work as sorters, counter staff, mail deliverers, technical experts, senior managers and more: women are an integral part of the 5.1 million people employed by the Posts of the UPU’s 192 member countries.
On International Women’s Day, the Universal Postal Union salutes the dedication and talent of all the women who work daily to help meet the communication needs of citizens and businesses through the postal service.
According to UPU statistics, women hold a high percentage of postal jobs in many countries, and especially in Eastern Europe. They make up 89 per cent of Ukraine’s 94,500 postal staff, compared to 82 per cent in Bulgaria (11,000), 86 per cent in Moldova (5,500) and Belarus (28,800), and 84 per cent in Lithuania (6,260), for example.
