Odisha based outfit Gram Tarang bags Best Performer Award by NSDC

Gram Tarang - the Social Entrepreneurship Outreach Entity of the Centurion University has been adjudged the 'Overall Best Performer' by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in 2011-12 for successfully operating in some of the most difficult terrains of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

NSDC, a not-for-profit outfit of the union finance ministry, has introduced annual performance awards to recognize the contribution made by its partners in transforming the skills landscape and help bridge the skills gap in the country.

The first such awards for the last financial year instituted by NSDC were given by executive director in the prime minister's National Council on Skill Development, J P Rai, and NSDC Chairman, MV Subbiah, on the concluding day of the 3rd NSDC Partners' Meeting in Delhi on Saturday.

The evaluation criteria was built on the basis of a scorecard, specifically prepared by consulting firm McKinsey, revolving around the scale, outcome, impact and sustainability of their operations.

An independent Jury decided the winners which comprised of representatives of Accenture, American India Foundation (AIF), and Michael and Susan Dell Foundation ( MSDF) and other independent members chose the winners for the various awards.

The selection was not on the basis of nomination or application rather on a confidential third party rigorous evaluation.

Gram Tarang provides training in tailoring, plumbing, textiles, construction, retail and production-related functions, as well as for becoming security guards.

The Jury took into account Gram Tarang's presence in Naxal-affected areas in its operational area in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha and its impact on the local population for naming it the winner of the biggest award, a NSDC press release said.
