CHENNAI: A court in Chennai has sentenced the Postal Assistant to three-and-a-half years rigorous imprisonment in a case of criminal misconduct filed by the CBI. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 22,65,400 on him.
According to the prosecution, Mohammed Maqdoom was designated as assistant sub-post master at Royapettah and Gopalapuram post offices during 2010-2011.
During his tenure, he abused his official position and misappropriated the money meant for the Kisan Vikas Patra, worth Rs 15.4 lakh. After creating false account numbers, he issued false pass books to customers.
The customers believed that the term deposit accounts had been opened. As such, he cheated them and committed criminal breach of trust, said the prosecution.
In 2012, the anti-corruption branch of the CBI chargesheeted Maqdoom under sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 468 read with 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the IPC along with the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Principal special judge for CBI cases J Krishnamoorthy pronounced the verdict on Wednesday.
