UPU News:-Countries elected to UPU bodies

Forty countries were elected to the UPU’s Council of Administration (CA) and Postal Operations Council (POC) for 2013-2016 in separate elections today during the Doha Congress.


The countries elected to the CA are: Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Brazil, Republic of Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Republic of Congo, Costa Rica, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Gabon, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Malawi, Mexico, Morocco, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, United States of America and Viet Nam.
As host of Congress, Qatar will automatically assume the CA chairmanship.
The CA - composed of 41 countries - meets annually at UPU headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, to ensure the continuity of the UPU's work between Congresses, supervise its activities and study regulatory, administrative, legislative and legal issues.
The CA can also take measures it considers necessary to resolve urgent issues. It approves the UPU's biennial budget and accounts, as well as yearly updates on the UPU's strategy and budget.
The Council is also responsible for promoting and coordinating all aspects of technical assistance among member countries.

Postal Operations Council

The countries elected to the Postal Operations Council are: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Benin, Brazil, the Republic of Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Ghana, Great Britain, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Qatar, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates and United States of America.
The chair of the POC will be determined at the body’s constituent meeting on Monday 15 October 2012.
The POC is the technical and operational mind of the UPU and meets annually at the UPU’s headquarters in Berne.
Its work programme is geared towards helping Posts modernize and upgrade their postal products and services. It deals with the operational, economic and commercial aspects of the postal business.
The body also makes recommendations to member countries on standards for technological, operational or other processes within its competence where uniform practices are essential.
