Need to evaluate contribution of women in household: Krishna Tirath

NEW DELHI: Women and Child Development ( WCD) minister Krishna Tirath has written to Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) to create a mechanism for valuation of household work by women to recognise their contribution to the economy.

Speaking at a two-day conference here, Tirath said that she had written to Srikant Jena, Minister of State in MOSPI to include time use surveys in the National Statistical System of the country.

"This process will enable valuation of the work of women, lead to recognition of their work as a crucial contribution to the economy, thereby forming basis for their entitlements," Tirath explained.

She said that the Ministry is in the process of consulting different stakeholders to arrive at a view on the subject.

Tirath's earlier statements have triggered a debate about the need to recognise the economic worth of housework done by women. She had remarked that husbands should give a certain portion of their income to housewives in recognition of their contribution at home.

Tirath is also expected to discuss this idea with various representatives of the state governments at the conference here.

In her speech here, Tirath also said that "the cooperation of the states is very crucial for taking forward the schemes of the ministry. The aim behind the conference was to seek the opinion of the states which implement the schemes of the Ministry regarding their operational issues, and also learn from the varied experiences of these states."
