Thousands of reserved seats in ministries, depts vacant, says Centre

The Centre has asked all its ministries and departments to submit their final report on filling up of the 'backlog' reserved vacancies (meant for SC\ST\OBC candidates) in government jobs by Monday.

Though all the ministries were supposed to fill up the backlog reserved vacancies through Special Recruitment Drive (SRD) by March 31, thousands of 'reserved' seats are still vacant.

All the ministries\departments had re-launched the drive in July last year after reviewing the vacancy positions in the wake of the first such recruitment drive. The first SRD was launched by the government in 2008.

Minister of state for personnel V Narayanasamy on Thursday said that the final status from various ministries and departments was being received in this regard.

The ministries and departments had been reminded to furnish the final report by May 21, he added while replying to a question in Rajya Sabha on whether the department of personnel and training (DoPT) has asked to submit a status report on 60,000-odd reserved vacancies in government jobs, including for the OBCs, have been filled.

Narayanasamy, in his written response, said that the Special Recruitment Drive, 2008 was reviewed and the government had re-launched the Drive on July 26, 2011 and all the Central ministries/departments were requested to fill up the backlog reserved vacancies by March 31 this year.

Giving reasons for such huge vacancies in 'reserved' category, the minister said: "Some reserved vacancies remain vacant for reasons like non-availability of suitable candidates, gap between arising of a vacancy and its filling up etc. It may, therefore, be no possible to fix any time line for filling up of all reserved vacancies".

He, however, added that all efforts are being made to fill up the backlog reserved vacancies and instructions already exist that if sufficient numbers of SC/ST/OBC candidates do not become available to fill up vacancies reserved for them in the first attempt of recruitment, a second attempt should be made for recruiting suitable candidates belonging to the category concerned in the same recruitment year, as early as possible, before the next recruitment.

The minister also informed that Special Recruitment Drives are launched from time to time for filling up of the backlog vacancies.
