Postmaster kills self accusing seniors of 'harassment'

A postal department employee committed suicide by consuming poison allegedly due to harassment by higher-ups at Konanur in Periyapatna taluk.

Police said K B Jalendra, 24, son of Basavaraju, was working as postmaster at Chikkanerale post office in K R Nagar since two years. During a higher official's visit on Wednesday, Jalendra was accused of corruption, misappropriation of funds and was suspended from duty. A dejected Jalendra retured to his hometown Konanur and killed himself, police said. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he died on the way.

When contacted, senior superintendent of postal department, D Shivaiah told TOI Jalendra was kept under suspension following charges of misappropriation of funds. He explained that three months ago ack there were charges of misconduct as he allegedly didn't deposit recurring deposit (RD) amount into customers account. During an inspection, Jalendra was found forging customers signatures and drawing money, Shivaiah said, adding preliminary investigation had shown that Jalendra had drawn Rs 2,000 from a customer's account by using fake specimen. It was confirmed during investigation and inspector relieved him from service pending departmental inquiry.

Shivaiah ruled out any harassment from senior officials. There were enough chances for Jalendra to defend himself if he has not committed any mistake, he said.
